We’re starting to hit the lunchbox rut, the every-day-it’s-the-same-thing feeling, both for me packing the lunch and my son eating it. My son is happy to eat fruit, but I’ve been sticking to in-season (and therefore less expensive) apples and oranges for a while now. As we head into winter, fresh fruit will be harder to come by.
Last time Shoppers had their double/triple coupon sale, I picked up a bunch of frozen fruit and stocked the freezer. I’ve started giving him a bowl of frozen fruit in his lunchbox; it thaws just enough by lunch to keep it cold, and he’s happy to have some summertime strawberries during the weeks of fall apples and Clementines. Yes, I realize the truly thrifty way would have been to buy strawberries during the summer, clean and slice them, and freeze them myself, but for less than a dollar a bag, I’m happy with this solution. Plus, I didn’t have to store them for months. And Shoppers is doing double/triple coupons again this week from Nov. 20-26, so I can buy a few more bags.
