Stock-up Scenarios for Safeway

Here are some scenarios that require multiple coupons to purchase multiples of the same item. Using promos like Living Well, Feeling Great Promo are how you get low, low prices for effective stockpiling. Below the examples, I've listed some ideas on how to collect so many coupons:

Skippy Peanut Butter is $2.50. You can print a .40 off coupon at RedPlum, which will double at some Safeways. Buy 12 for $30, use 12 coupons (you'd need multiple computers) for 9.60 off, then pay $20.40 and get the $10 Cat back. It's like paying $.87/jar.

Electrasol Power Tabs are on sale for $3.99. There will be a coupon in this Sunday's paper (4/19) for $2.50 off. You will need multiple papers, so buy extras or ask your neighbors/family for their extra coupons. Buy 8 boxes for $31.92, use 8 coupons for $20 off, you pay $11.92 and get the $10 Cat back. It's like paying $1.92 for all 8 boxes. Thanks to momto5 at Slickdeals for the scenario.

Huggies Wipes are $5.99. You may have coupons from their mailers, or you can get .75 off coupons in this Sunday's (4/19) newspaper. Buy 5 wipes for $29.95, plus a filler item (like the .59 Kraft Macaroni & Cheese) to get you over $30. Take off the $1.50 for each coupon (if your Safeway doubles), pay $22.45 and get the $10 Cat back. It's like paying $2.49 for each large refill pack. Thanks to sheraht at Slickdeals for the scenario.

You'll notice that the above scenarios require large amounts of the same coupon. How do you get them? Here are some ideas:

  • Ask your neighbors, family, friends, etc. for their coupon insert "extras," whatever they don't need. This is a great way to get multiple coupons for free.
  • Purchase extra copies of the Sunday paper. If you have a Dollar Tree near you, they sell the paper for $1.00, less than most places.
  • Smaller newspapers often have coupon inserts, sometimes for free. In my area of Northern Virginia, the Fairfax County Times is a free paper on Wednesday and includes the Smartsource inserts.
  • For internet printable coupons, ask friends and family to print their two-per-computer and give/send them to you. You can also offer to trade coupons; for example, we can't have PB here (allergy), so I don't need the four I can print, but I would love someone's $1.00 off All Detergent coupons.
  • Purchase them from a coupon clipping service or Ebay. If you really want to stock up on items that can be stored long-term, it's worth paying .99 for 20 coupons because you'll recoup your cost. Try to find free shipping, or consider buying several sets of coupons with friends and splitting it up.
What are some other ways to collect multiples of the same coupons?

You'll find more scenarios at the end of my original promo post.

I got it at a Ffx Cty public library. I think it comes out on Wednesday or Thursday.

Oh thanks for the heads up Gina! We are going to the Chantilly Library today for storytime and I will look for this!

My Safeway is VERY strict and only lets us use 3 of the same coupon per transaction. I'll have to do a combo of scenarios to get the cheap price on some of this stuff! The PB is a great deal and the wipes too! Thank you!

Some people I know live by a recycle dumpster and they just pull out the coupon inserts. Dumpster Diving.

Gina, as always, you are a wonderful wealth of information!
I didn't know that the FFXCntTimes did SS. Great tip. I also think participating in a coupon train is a good way to trade away those Qs you don't need (like we don't need pet food Qs) and get a few you might need, like diapers Qs, we go through 2 cases in three weeks. YIKES! Anyway, many of the couponing forums have threads about this topic. Only downside: sometimes postage adds up if you are sending along a big bunch, and you have to send an envelope each week.
Thanks again! Abbie

Thank you for all the work! I just realized that I have not been getting any feeds in google reader for a long time...now I know you switched domain names. Guess I am slow with all this high tech reader stuff!

My wife and I always make a Sunday trip to Starbucks. We keep it frugal by getting drip coffee, then get loads of coupon inserts when people read their Sunday papers and put it in the bin for other people to look at.

My first trip was a bust. I bought $30.58 in marked items and no cat :-( The cs person told me it was b/c i only paid $14 oop. I know that's not true.

Emily--you're right, that has nothing to do with it. I would call Catalina at 888-8COUPONS and go over your receipt with them. They can help and even mail you the Cat.

Yes, I called the catalina company when my cat didn't print for the post deal and they were super helpful. Mailed it to me right away. You do have to have your receipt there to read all the numbers off to them.

I had trouble with the LWFG promo today, no cat printed and the manager said it's because I used mf q's and the order was below $30. He gave me $10 cash but said this is the only time they would do it. I called corporate and they agreed with him. So now I don't think I will go back to that store. I'm hoping that they haven't switched on the no mf q's button for the cats.

CFU--Nope, that's not true. A lot of managers/cashiers say that because they are clueless about how these promos work. If you hadn't gotten the $10, you could call Catalina as I mentioned above.

Can you roll the $10 cat into another scenario or is this like walgreens where you can't use the RRs on the same deal? Thanks!

Gina said...

Nicole--yes, you can roll the $10 Cat. I've done it several times!

Hi Gina - thanks for the tip about the Fairfax County Times. I found the website that lists the locations of what I guess are the "bins". http://www.fairfaxtimes.com/FAQ/locations/
However, I drove around yesterday looking around to find the ones in Springfield without much luck. Are these bins inside the stores and libraries? Where are they?
Thanks! Holly
Love your site!

Holly--I have never seen a freestanding newspaper machine for this paper like there are for others. I've only seen stacks of them at libraries, my car mechanic's, etc.
