One of the big ways we save money is by cooking our own meals. You know I’m a big proponent of meal planning, and by planning ahead instead of calling for takeout, we save $10-20 per dinner. One of our favorites is making our own pizza.
For the crust, I either make my own for pennies using this recipe, use Pillsbury Pizza Crust if I get a great deal with a coupon (but that’s not as healthy), or use whole wheat pita breads (as you see here).
For the sauce, I mix a can of tomato paste (I get Muir Glen Organic Tomato Paste for free at Giant) with water to thin it out. I shake in some basil, oregano, parsley, and pepper. I haven’t bought jarred “pizza sauce” in years!
For the toppings, we use mozzarella cheese (look for deals on cheese, then freeze it) and plenty of vegetables. This is one of our vegetarian dinners that goes through the rotation, and it’s a great way to get veggies into your kids (and yourself). We use whatever we have on hand–this time, it was green peppers, mushrooms, spinach and olives, but choose whatever your family likes.
We love these little pita pizzas, and they’re so much healthier than delivery pizza, plus it saves us a lot of money!

I love pita pizzas! In fact, we had them tonight. Hope more people will discover them with your post!

I’m going to have to try making my own pizza sauce like this. The price of pizza sauce lately is crazy.
I have found that the local pizza places will sell you pizza dough for about $2-3. It works well for homemade pizza or calzones (pizza pockets that are great ways to use up leftover bits of veggies & meat/chicken)
