DIY Dining Room Buffet

DIY Day @ ASPTL

I’m a day late, but I’ve been working hard to include this project for DIY Day at A Soft Place to Land. It only took me two years, but I finally painted my $20 dining room buffet. Back when I bought it two summers ago, I knew it had “good lines,” and I always thought it would look good black. Hubby wasn’t convinced, and we couldn’t figure out how to get it done around the kids. Well, I finally jumped in and did it, mostly with two 3-year-olds sitting behind me saying, “Good job, Mommy,” and “You missed a spot right there.” It was a pain trying to keep everyone from touching it all week, but it’s done. And I love it.

I bought new knobs at Home Depot for $8, and the paint was $7. Total cost for my fabulous “new” buffet was…..drum roll please…..only $35.

WOW that came out great. I don't think I am that brave to take that on. Where did you find that for only $20. Great Job.

What kind of paint did you use? Did you just sand the dresser first? I have a dresser I would love to do this too. Looks great!!

    Gorgeous!

  4. looks fabulous. i'm on the hunt for some garage sale nightstands to make into something like some beautiful but ridiculously priced nightstands i saw at anthropologie

My hubby is in the middle of sanding a buffet that we have that looks similar to your "before" picture. I also got it for supper cheap. He's been waiting to see what color I want him to paint it. I've been contemplating if I want it black or not. Then I jumped on the internet and saw your post and I'm convinced that I want it black now since yours came out so great! Can't wait now to see how mine turns out, too.

  9. It looks so great! I'm on a DIY kick right now too, stil trying to hunt down some cheap good quality pieces to redo.

thanks for the inspiration. This'll help convince my husband that it'll turn out great!

  10. Love it! The black looks wonderful and really brings out the design of the piece.

  11. one word: INSPIRING…

I am buying a run-down UGLY yellow-ish dresser with a mirror from the Habitat ReStore for my daughter's birthday gift.

You'll inspired me to buy it and re-paint it!!

    Wish me luck!

My hubby just walked in and saw me reading your post. He said "Wow, that's a nice looking buffet". You have his vote (and mine)!

That looks great! It is amazing what new hardware and paint can do! We just finished painting our kitchen cabinets. It was a process to get it all done but I love the results.

  17. Yes, I sanded it all over. First I used a grittier sandpaper, to get the shiny finish off, then I went back with SuperFine to make sure it was smooth. I wiped it down with a wet rag and made sure it was dry before I pained. It took three coats of black paint until I couldn't see the wood anymore.

I picked up a can of Krylon Indoor/Outdoor paint at Walmart. I don't know if wall paint would have worked, but I didn't have any black.

  18. That is gorgeous! Nice job.
