DIY Thursday: Mod Podge Wall Art

If you’ve found me for the first time from Do-It-Yourself Day at A Soft Place to Land, welcome! I hope you’ll take a look around MoneywiseMoms. I’ve been in a real home improvement kick this summer, resulting in DIY projects like this dining room buffet and this adorable dresser. Now I’m focusing on my bare, blank walls–sigh–but thanks to the many creative blogs out there, I have lots of ideas and just need to figure out how to get them all done! First up was this great circle idea from Simple Mom. Here’s my version:

You could get quite creative with this project, but I kept it simple because I have trouble matching papers and colors. I just used a pack of neutrals that I got at a scrapbooking event last fall. The browns, greens and blues will work in almost any room of my house. I bought the Mod Podge with a coupon at Michael’s for $3.00 or so, and I think the 18×24 canvas was another $2 with a 50% coupon on another visit. This was a pretty simple project:

1. I cut out a bunch of circles using my Creative Memories Custom Cutting System and figured out how many I could get across and down with a little white space in between. You could also paint your canvas ahead of time, but I wanted the white background because I have white trim on the walls in my house.

2. I put a layer of Mod Podge down on the canvas and also applied it to the back of each circle. I laid the circles out as best I could, just eye-balling the space in between. No, they’re not perfect, but it’s not noticeable and doesn’t bother me. [If you're a major perfectionist, this might not be the project for you.] You can use an old credit card to squeeze out the air bubbles and make sure the circles lay flat.

3. Once the circles were dry, I put a layer of Mod Podge over the top of the whole thing to seal it.

4. I hung it up. Easy peasy! Total cost for my wall art? About $5.00.

Now that I’ve made one, I can see how easy it would be to do pastel or themed papers for a baby’s room (what a great inexpensive gift!), personalize the colors for a kitchen or guest room, or even use a different shape (what about using a butterfly shape for a little girl’s room?).
