WFMW: Closing the Kitchen

My husband was out of town, so I’d been doing dinner, kitchen cleanup, kid cleanup, baths and bedtime by myself for a week. I’ve got the pattern down pat by now, and one thing that is really working for me is closing the kitchen each night. After dinner, I’ve sent the kids off to clean up the living room while I load the dishwasher, and once the kitchen and dining room were clean, I turned off the lights and didn’t go back in–I didn’t want to dirty another plate or glass! For the whole week, I haven’t eaten after dinner. No snacks. No just-need-a-nibble-of-something. And I haven’t even missed it. Interesting…

I’m hoping to keep this new habit up, even with husband home, even with nights out, even with Halloween candy in the house next week. Aaaaah!

How do you keep yourself from snacking after dinner?

I've often found that even if I think I want a big dessert, if I start with something to drink first, like a caffeine-free diet soda or a big mug of decaf tea, by the time I've finished the drink I often don't even want the snack anymore.

How do I keep myself from snacking at night? I don't…that's the problem.

It helps to brush my teeth after dinner though. I'm lazy enough that I don't want to REbrush them, so it limits me to water only after dinner. It works when I do it.

I brush after dinner, too! Works most of the time. Chewing a piece of gun will often keep me away from snacks, too.
