  1. I wrote to Home Depot corporate this week and had a phone call from the Fairfax store’s office manager in reply regarding “valid ID” for the 10% discount today. As a veteran with less than 20 years service I do have discharge papers but not an ID and those discharge papers are appropriately kept in my bank safe deposit box. The good news is that the local store as well as region (extending to Philadelphia) does not ask for an ID and uses the honor system for anyone requesting a veterans’ discount. The office manager said that all cashiers are versed in this policy and that only once did he recall having to speak with one three years ago when a customer was asked to present ID.
On the flip side, a veteran who sees the printed policy (in Sunday’s insert, which prompted my inquiry) may hesitate to shop at the store or to request a discount for fear of being put in an uncomfortable situation with a cashier. (I have not inquired as to how Applebee’s or Outback handle this). The corporate email response completely misread my comments so I do not know how this is handled elsewhere in the country.
I did shop at Home Depot today, asked for my discount as a veteran and received exactly the treatment explained by the manager over the phone. Three cheers to Home Depot in this region!
