DIY Day: Valentine Blocks

I’m finally back to DIY Day! This is one of my favorite blog carnivals; I love seeing everyone’s home DIY projects, and I’m thrilled to share these Valentine Blocks. I’d been seeing these decoupaged blocks around the blogosphere, mostly as Christmas decor, but since it takes me so long to get a project done…they’re for Valentine’s Day. :)

Here’s what you need:

4×4 block
Craft paint
Scrapbook paper
Mod Podge

I couldn’t find large blocks at Michael’s, so I just bought a 2×4 at Home Depot for $1.92 and had it cut into blocks. It took a while (but the cuts are free!), but now I have blocks for lots of projects.

First, sand your blocks if they’re cut from wood like mine. Then, coat them with the craft paint. I didn’t bother fully coating the faces because I knew they’d be covered by scrapbook paper.

Then, cut your scrapbook paper. I cut  mine smaller than 4×4 (just eyeballed it), so that the pink border would show. I applied the Mod Podge to the face of the block, laid down the paper, and smoothed it out with an old credit card. Here’s a video tutorial on how to apply Mod Podge if you’re new to the wonderful stuff.

I used a craft punch to cut little hearts out of coordinating paper, and I traced the letters onto black paper. You could also use letters cut from a Sizzix machine, Cricut, or other die cuts. Apply these with Mod Podge as well, and once it’s dry, apply another two coats of Mod Podge over them to seal it. On the back, you could just leave it painted, apply more paper, or spell out a different message for after Valentine’s Day (then flip the blocks around).

Last, set them up as a cute decoration!
