Gardening Through Freecycle

When we first moved into our house three years ago, there was a lot of empty space in the front, and the cost of filling it with beautiful plants was daunting. Still, I had a vision of what it could be, and then I discovered Freecycle. Each week, I saw more and more local gardeners offering plants and supplies as they worked on their own yards and cleaned out their sheds. I met so many wonderful people willing to share their plants and their knowledge with me.

The Shasta daisies that were passed on to me have grown larger and stronger every year, and now surround a hydrangea bush that I also received on Freecycle.

I’ve also received gardening tools, buckets, and other supplies. It never hurts to ask, and it can save you a lot of money!

My hostas are just poking through, and as they get bigger each year, I’ll be able to split them and share them with others as well.

I’ve shared bricks and paver stones, tools and more, and one of my favorite parts of Freecycle is how fast things get picked up, right from your yard. It helps you declutter and is such a great community resource.

It’s taken a few years, adding a few plants here and there, but this spring, I have strong perennials poking up after a rough winter covered in over three feet of snow. I probably could have supplied my Square Foot Garden with Freecycle items as well, but it does take time, so you have to be prepared to wait and see what’s offered and then request items. We were just too eager to start right away!

Have you received or Freecycled any garden items? What are some other ways to get FREE gardening supplies?
