Frugal Fun: Plant Pokes

Besides planting our Square Foot Garden, the kids have been enjoying all the spring (and now summer) flowers growing all around. To liven up our potted plants, we made plant pokes–perfect for mailing to Grandma to put in her porch container, and also fun to stick into a mini rosebush as a great gift for a special teacher or neighbor.

I had some leftover circles and hearts from a project years ago, but I also found packages of popsicle sticks and cutout shapes (butterflies, dragonflies, teddy bears, etc.) for just $1.00 a bag at my local Dollar Tree. Sometimes they have a good selection of craft supplies!

To make plant pokes, you’ll need:

popsicle sticks
wood shapes
markers or paint
matte spray for sealing

Let the kids have fun decorating! We tried both markers and paint. I have them decorate the shapes before I spray them with the sealer (so they’ll hold up to the rain), and then glue them to the popsicle sticks. It’s better to keep the sticks natural so you don’t get paint or sealer in your soil.
