Gina vs. Head Lice

Just when I thought I was getting really really good at dealing with head lice–since we’re in our third week of it and of course it’s the child with the wild curly hair so it takes forEVER to go through–and just one day after I actually called my sister to celebrate the face that we were lice-free…

My son got head lice. Here we go again. I did 14 loads of laundry last week, because of the head lice. I am constantly itching. I am constantly picking through everyone’s head, even at the dinner table until my husband tells me to stop.

Head Lice

Oh, and the third child has a mysterious illness that makes her moan and groan and not go to school or eat anything, but the doctor says it’s not strep and wait it out. And now we’re expecting a giant snowstorm that will make us housebound, which makes me moan and groan because I’ve been housebound between sick kid and head lice kid for four days already.

I will get through this, because Tough Times Don’t Last.

At least it is taking my worries off the furlough and the disappointment of cancelling our spring break trip since we don’t know what’s happening with my husband’s job.

How was your weekend?

  1. Oh no! I hope the head lice go away soon. Love that article you linked to. It’s true, tough times will pass.

  2. This summer we had lice at our household for the 1st time and I highly recommend this terminator comb. It wasn’t until I got this comb that we finally got ahead of the lice. Hope they are gone from your household soon. I so feel for you as I remember all the loads of wash I was doing every day over that time.

    • Thanks–I’m going to get it and hope I don’t need it! I’m laughing at the description, though. It says “can be used multiple times to treat the entire family” and then just under that “Do Not Share Comb.” ?

  3. Oh my word, I’ve felt your pain! With four girls it took forever to get rid of and I eventually chopped off my oldest’s hair. Hate those things. I do hope it gets better for you.

Now that my daughter is almost in middle school, I think the days of head lice are behind us for now – until baby sister starts school! I have seen lately in parents magazines about two new products. One is a hair shampoo, but you don’t have to comb through hair with a fine comb afterwards to get the nits. The other is a hair dryer that can kill the nits and lice. I don’t know how easy they are to come by, but I am keeping those ideas tucked away in the back of my head for the future!

      Hang in there, Gina!

      • I’ve heard about a heat iron thing, too, but would be afraid to use that on the kids. Thanks for the moral support, Natalie!

    • Thanks, Dorinda! I really don’t want to have to cut their hair, it’s pretty short already. I am threatening to cut my son’s, that would be the easiest thing to do.

  4. I’ve never read such disappointment from you before, Gina. This really must be a tough situation. I’m very sorry for all the things you’ve had to go through. One of my favorite quotes to live by is “this, too, shall pass.” Praying for you that things get better.

    • I know, Amanda, it’s not like me. I’m coming off of my winter Seasonal Affect and was feeling so good. But this constant threat of income loss, cloudy/gloomy weather, and ongoing sickness has brought me way down. I’m out today walking in the sun and will soak up as much as I can before the bad weather starts tonight.

  5. Hi Gina,

Oh my…so sorry for you. I’ve been there too many times. The last time my daughters got it, I just couldn’t bear to deal with it myself. The school recommended a service that comes to your house called, Lice Happens. They were fabulous!! FYI…. Also, the Lice Meister comb is awesome!!

  6. Oh my! Hoping everything gets better soon. I was the same .. constantly checking. And going through my daughter’s waist length hair was very, very hard. I found the metal nit combs were much easier to use than the plastic ones. This was the second year in a roll that she got it .. and hopefully it will be the last time. Sending good vibes your way!

  7. It’s so weird, I just heard from my sister, who also lives in Northen Va. Her kids just got lice for the first time, she’s preparing for a major snow storm, and her husband has been out of town for work The mom job has got the be the hardest.
A few years back I had the pleasure of dealing with head lice (heavy sarcasm) and the only thing that did the trick was this: Lather mayo (real stuff not miracle whip) on the kids hair. Put a shower cap on and towel around their neck and leave as long as you can, about an hour, if your child can take it. I put a movie on for my daughter. Then rinse with white vinegar. I tried the chemical two times and didn’t get rid of them but this treatment did. Also it’s not going to ruin their hair.

  8. I totally agree with Patty’s suggestions. You’ve got to cut off their oxygen supply. I know that coconut oil works well and it’s a great way to condition the hair. Good luck!!

  9. Kuddos to you for talking about this in public! Some people are so hush-hush about their kids having lice that it limits the solution-sharing that you’re getting here. I have 5 girls in my home and we fought this off and on for MONTHS! Just when I’d think we were finally done those little pests would resurface. Someone along the way suggested Tea Tree oil as a deterrent. I have since added it to my girls’ hair detangler and shampoo and they have never returned. Good luck!

  10. Lice seems to go through my son’s class once a year. This year instead of freaking out that he was going to get it I bought some Repel shampoo at Walgreens. I think Fairy Tales which you can buy at ULTA is the same thing. It has tee tree oil and rosemary in it and I guess those pests don’t like it. So far it has worked for us. But maybe we have just been lucky to avoid the bug too

  11. my daughter had wildly curly hair when she was little, and of course she got head lice. And they really seemed to like her because it took us forever to get rid of them. i tried all the over the counter remedies which were tough on her hair and didn’t seem to work for her. I finally resorted to coating her head in mayo, wrapping it in plastic and making her sleep in it. It worked. But ew. she wasn ‘t impressed in the least. I definately feel your pain. As well as your disappointed over canceling spring break trip. We don’t have the possible furlough hanging over our heads, but financially we shouldn’t go. So we had to cancel as well. I’m waiting for the storm as well. And I’m not looking forward to that either.

  12. Sally Wallace says:

When my girls were in school a friend told me to use “coconut” shampoo and conditioner during the school year. She told me lice do not like the smell of coconut. And to my surprise my girls never got them again.
Try this and see if it works for you.

    Blessings,
    Sally

hey there. just wanted to encourage you through this time. you will get through this and this too shall pass.two of my four children and myself had lice 2 years ago. it lasted for 2 months. i combed through our hair every single day, twice a day. it was not fun. i even pulled out my microscope to see if what I was pulling out was alive or dead. i became so crazy about it but coming them out and putting the comb in a cup of water helped so that i could see what i was actually getting out of our heads. my daughter and i have very long hair and hers and mine took the longest. but we got through it and i finally decided to stop combing and checking when i felt we were done. just persevere and keep combing. don’t fret. god will use this to glorify himself. i thought to myself i can’t use this for anything, but when i went to camp as a counselor i was able to minister to a little girl who had lice when she was at camp. god used it for his glory!!

  14. Our whole family except my husband got lice this summer. Two sets of twins 5 and 3 plus an 11 year old. The OTC shampoos were ok. We did get prescription from Dr which helped tremendously. However, that terminator comb was the BOMB diggity. It helped SO much. We eventually got through it. Your comments about itching was me August 2012. Two weeks and we were totally over it. A month later I was psychologically better and not itching b/c I thought I still had those little critters. I let the kids play on my phone while using the terminator – that kept them distracted.

  15. Isn’t it funny how I totally did not read this article when it first came out fearing that it might bring the wrath of lice into my house. Now reading it because, yup. Lice. Went to CVS and they were all out of lice removal products so what does that say? Aghhhh…. Three cheers for all dealing with this. ugh. I’m sure there is a direct correlation between lice removal product sales and alcohol sales…

    • Sorry you got it too, Janel! It’s been going around in our school so I’m sure it hits everywhere en masse. I am pretty sure (knock on wood) that we’re over it, but I still check everyone and wonder how long I’ll be paranoid about it.
