Animal Upon Animal {Favorite Family Game}

Are you playing games as a family? There are so many great skills learned while playing together–how to take turns, how to be patient, how to be a good sport whether winning or losing, plus focus and concentration. One of the reasons our 7-year-old twins can play games meant for older kids now is because we started so young, but don’t lament if you haven’t started yet. Start now! One of our favorite family games, Animal Upon Animal, is perfect for all ages, from 3 to grandparent.

Animal Upon Animal is an English remake of a German game called Tier Auf Tier. If you’re familiar with the toy company HABA, they make quality wooden toys for young children, and this game is no exception. We love games with manipulative wooden pieces, and in between games my girls love playing with the little wooden animals. You’ll find Animal Upon Animal, and other HABA games, at a local independent toy store or at Amazon.

There’s actually no advantage to being an adult with this game. I’ve been beaten many times by little ones with little hands. You roll the dice, which tells you which of your animals you need to balance on top of the wooden crocodile, sometimes 1, sometimes 2. There’s also a side of the dice that lets you pass off an animal to an opponent, or to place an animal next to the crocodile. We’ve had this game for many years now, since the twins were 3, and it’s still played often, especially when family comes to visit. I love having all-ages games that last for years and years.
