WFMW: Make a Decision about Monetizing Your Blog

This week’s Works-for-me-Wednesday is actually themed “Mom, I’m Bored,” so I feel obligated to send you over to my Free/Low-Cost Summer Movies for Kids post. But I’ve been devoting my WFMW posts to blogging tips that work for me…

Tip #3 is….Make a decision about monetizing your blog.

One of the topics I’m emailed or asked about most is how to make money blogging. Yes, it’s possible, but before we even go there, you need to think about whether you want to monetize at all. I think most of us jump in and grab whatever comes along without really planning or thinking ahead. So let’s just take a moment and do that. Some things for you to consider:

  • Are you writing a personal blog? If you’re mostly sharing family photos and journaling, as an online scrapbook, you may not want to monetize. You need to think about the type of things you normally post about and how that might change, or if you’re willing to change that. Other blog niches may take to monetizing more easily: food, travel, reviews, etc.
  • Monetizing your blog changes your “voice.” Even when you try not to let it, it does. Once you start thinking about making money, you start thinking about making MORE money, and it can sway you. To avoid this, set a goal for yourself, maybe $50 per month if you’re not currently earning anything, and work towards that. I set a goal of earning $500/month by the end of 2009, so I set my goal a little higher this year.
  • Understand how FTC Disclosure works. You’ve probably seen it on the blogs you read, those little statements about relationships and who’s providing what. If you’re going to accept products, gift cards, money, etc. for your blog, you need to disclose. SheBlogs gives some quick tips on how to cover yourself.
  • Now think about your content for a moment–What do you want your blog to look like? Not just ads or buttons in your sidebar, but within your posts? When you read blogs, do you feel like you’re hearing the blogger or just a salesperson? Do you see the same sales-y posts on all the blogs you read? Look for examples of seamless monetizing, where the influence and voice of the blogger lend themselves naturally to the item/service being presented. You may prefer to incorporate monetizing this way on your blog, though it can be challenging.

Once you think through a few of these ideas, you’ll have a better sense of whether or not to monetize your blog. Then, it’s just a matter of getting started. I’ll start you off next Wednesday with an easy one, but in the meantime, let me know:

What questions do you have about monetizing your blog?

WFMW: Connect With Other Bloggers

I’m devoting Wednesdays to Blogging Tips that work for me. Last week, I shared how I use blog memes.

Tip #2 is….Connect with other bloggers.

Connecting with others brings you so many benefits–a friend to bounce ideas off or work through struggles alongside, guest posts and content material, referrals to monetizing and PR opportunities, sharing information so you’re not reinventing the wheel, and more.

There are many ways to connect. Use whatever works for you:

  • Comments! Leave a comment on posts you read, ask a question, compliment them, or share how they’re reaching you with their writing. Sometimes I get a response back via email.
  • Twitter. When you see another blogger is online, Twitter works as IM. You can chat, ask questions, collaborate, share. By retweeting other bloggers’ posts and tweets, you’re creating rapport.
  • Meet-ups, both formal and informal. Just a few weeks ago, some of us Northern VA frugal bloggers had dinner together. It was great to meet each other after online knowing each other “virtually” for so long. Then last week, I went to MomzShare, a great meet-up of DC area mom bloggers (and there were even gluten-free cupcakes!). It was crazy with 70+ bloggers in attendance, but I met a lot of new people I’d only seen in blogland.
  • Skype and old-fashioned telephone. So far, I’m only using Skype for its IM function (can’t figure out the microphone part), but it’s useful because you can create a chat for many many people at once. Having a conversation with 10 people is interesting! But there’s lots to share and learn. I set up a night to chat with a local blogging friend, and when we couldn’t get Skype to work, I just picked up the phone. We discussed our challenges and obstacles and helped each other out.
  • Conferences. To do a lot of networking, learning, and meeting new people all at once, you can try a Blog Conference. I’m going back to Type A Mom in September. It’s just my pace, a smaller conference, and I’m excited to learn more after being another year into this crazy venture.
How do you connect with other bloggers? How has it helped you?

WFMW: Blogging Tips

For months I’ve been wanting to write a series of Blogging Tips, to cover topics I’m asked and emailed about all the time, but I just haven’t found the time. I think I’ll devote a bunch of Wednesdays to some quick snippets and call it Blogging Tips that Work for Me. Hopefully they’ll work for you too. Back when I did my reader survey (in January), it told me there were a LOT of bloggers who read MoneywiseMoms. Whether you’re writing a personal blog or are trying to make some money with your blog, hopefully you’ll find these tips helpful. And if you have questions, just leave them in the comments and we’ll help each other out. So here we go!

Tip #1 is….Use blog memes as accountability for yourself, both personally and professionally.

For example, each week I post my Meal Plan Monday, which means that I have to take time over the weekend to plan out the week’s meals and make a grocery list. I did this for over a year before I started blogging, but it wasn’t until I had the accountability of that Monday post that I did it regularly. And, without fail, if I don’t take the time to do the work, don’t put up the post, our meals are helter-skelter all week (usually ends in take out or something expensive and/or unhealthy).

When you make a regular post on your blog, not only does it keep you accountable, but your cheerleaders step up and encourage you (readers making comments). It helps keep you motivated and feels great. That’s why I’m telling you that I want to use WFMW to post these blogging tips (they’re just sitting here in a notebook!); it will keep me accountable and I have a small goal each week. If you need ideas for a meme, check out this huge list of blog memes. You’re sure to find one that matches your blog genre or writing style. You can set tiny goals for yourself personally–with cooking, organizing, or gardening–or choose one that helps you grow professionally in your posting and writing. You can also use blog memes to Increase Your Traffic/Subscribers.

What memes are you participating in?

WFMW: Blogging Tip–Increasing Your Traffic/Subscribers

This week’s Works for Me Wednesday is themed–what are your blogging tips? Here’s one of mine:

One way I’ve increased my traffic and subscribers has been by participating in memes (like this one!), but particularly those outside my niche. I read a lot of non-frugal blogs–decorating, parenting, cooking–and I love all the linkups they share. So I’ve made a point to participate some of their memes, and I’ve really seen an increase in traffic from those blogs. Besides getting some home projects done and having fun crafting, I’m also getting new people to check out my blog. And sometimes they stay! Here are some memes you might want to try:

There are TONS of memes happening in the blogosphere. Find one or two that are a good match for you but are outside your niche, and give it a try!

What are some ways you increase your readership and subscribers?

Go see the big Linky at We Are That Family for lots of great tips!

Blog Goals Gone Wrong

If you’re reading this in an email, you need to click over to see the fancy, high-tech graph I’ve created to show the status of my blog goals for 2009.

I set three goals for my blog at the beginning of 2009: to get to 50,000 page views per month, reach 3,000 subscribers/followers, and earn $500/month. I did all three, which is great, but I’ve also seen a real problem in the amount of time I’m spending on the computer, mostly fooling around on Twitter and reading other blogs, versus other things I used to do–like standing, stretching, walking, moving. I wish I was kidding. I wasn’t in great shape at the top of the year, and I can tell things are worse now. I have problems with the circulation in my legs when I sit at the computer for any amount of time, I have a nice callous from the mousepad, and I get a sore shoulder from too much typing. It’s time to make a change.

My goals for 2010?

1) Be more active. Hard to do with three small children in a winter climate, but I vow to move around my house more. Go up and down the stairs (instead of sending a toddler to fetch things for me), dance with the kids, walk when I can get outside, try the Wii Fit again, etc. Sit at the computer less (see #2) Since I’m a numbers person, the easiest way to make this measurable for me is to wear a pedometer.

2) Sit at the computer less. This is tough. I love the computer. I love my blog. I love writing. I love reading blogs, laughing at blogs, getting inspiration on all things decor, crafts, cooking, parenting, etc. I love zoning out to computer games. I love chatting on Twitter when I’m stuck in the house with three little ones and 20 inches of snow and there’s no other adults around. Sigh. But I need to decrease my computer time, so here’s my plan. I’m going to schedule work time, use my time wisely, and learn to write faster. I’m not a fast writer. I go off on a tangent, edit while I write (you’re not supposed to do that), spend time clicking around looking for coupons, etc. I need to get better at this and my work time will be much more effective.

I will write out some real, tangible goals for the blog this weekend, so look for those Monday along with all my highfalutin’ plans. I like to have a combination of numbers-reality and fantasy-crazy, just to keep me on my toes. Have a Happy New Year’s Eve!

A Little Gift for Me?

I really appreciate all of my readers! I’m working hard going into the New Year to make Moneywise Moms even better–for you and for me. One of the things that would help right now would be a little bit of data. If you’re a regular reader, could you please give me 2 minutes of your time and answer 11 quick multiple-choice questions? The survey is completely anonymous, and it would help me in my planning for 2010.

Thank you so much!

Wish You Were Here

Good Morning from beautiful Asheville, North Carolina! It was a long drive, and I got some very odd looks from people, since I was having a one-woman party in my car, singing at the top of my lungs. I did get a little confused when I saw this sign, but apparently I was going the right way, because I made it.
And I had been nervous about coming, seeing as this is my first work-related (albeit fun) activity in more than six years. But I’m doing fine. People are very friendly, very welcoming, and it’s been great getting to meet bloggers face-to-face that I’d only met on Twitter or email before.

I’m rooming with Dana from Frugal in Virginia, and we knew we had a lot in common, but oh my we were up till 2:00am chatting about blogs, kids, being here, etc. Ridiculous.

On tap for today–lots of sessions on blogging and more networking. There are companies here learning how they can get involved with bloggers to promote their products, and they give away things–I have some GREAT gifties to share with you when I get back–hee hee!

How and Why I’m Using Twitter

Some of you know, because I’ve seen you there, that MoneywiseMoms (meaning me, Gina) is on Twitter. And some of you don’t even know what Twitter is. Here’s my layman’s explanation of what it is, then how and why you might use it:

What is Twitter? It’s like a giant IM (instant messaging) party. You can send a little “tweet” out telling people what’s new, where you are, what you’re doing, etc. You can tweet back and forth with one person or a whole group, an instant online conversation. If you need a visual explanation, here’s a great video that explains how it works.

Why would you use Twitter? Let me share the ways I’m using it so you can get some ideas:

As a blog reader, I use Twitter to enter contests; sometimes tweeting about a contest or re-tweeting (cutting and pasting) the blogger’s tweet counts as your entry (you know how I love blog contests). I use Twitter to be part of larger conversations, like ResourcefulMommy’s Sitewarmings. She hosts discussions such as this one on child safety. I also enjoy hearing personal tidbits from the bloggers I read; I know that’s not everyone, but I feel like it puts a personal face to the written “voice.”

As a blog writer, I use Twitter to share deals and information that doesn’t make it onto my MoneywiseMoms site. Sometimes a deal comes up late at night, is very temporary, or I simply don’t have time to write up a full post, but I can tweet it quickly. I also use it to send reminders when I’ve put up a blog post ahead of time; for example, I shared today’s Lowe’s Build & Grow event on Tuesday, but I tweeted a reminder on Friday. I can share articles and blog posts that I read online that I think my followers might like. I can also use Twitter to ask questions. For example, I was writing a blog post about bartering so I tweeted, “Does anyone have a story about successful trading/bartering?” to get stories other than my own.

Twitter isn’t for everyone, but I enjoy how it serves as micro-blogging, both as a reader and as a blogwriter. It’s helping me promote MoneywiseMoms and spread the word about shopping smart and saving money.

Are you using Twitter? How are you using it?

How We are THAT Family

Today I’m honored to be joining the THAT Family Tree Society. You have to be really special to get into this club. Your kids have to destroy grocery store property, loudly proclaim their potty prowess while you’re doing a phone interview with a reporter, and generally make you laugh every day.

What happens in your family that makes you THAT family?

If you’re not reading Kristen’s blog, you should. It’s as funny as it is inspirational, both in parenting and homemaking. She’s the hostess of Works for Me Wednesday and an amazing mom of three who makes me happy to part of the blogworld, both as a writer and as a reader. Thanks, Kristen!
