How can I keep my side dishes for picnics cold?

There’s a lot of cool things out there now you can use to keep picnic side dishes cool. They have ice packs, freezeable storage containers, and more.

A really simple way to do this is to just use a second bowl that is larger than the bowl your salad or side dish is in and fill it will ice, then place your bowl of salad into the ice bowl! That keeps it from getting too warm and also keeps it from gettin wet in any way!

Ingredients to avoid if you don’t want to refrigerate your side dishes:

Some things to keep in mind if you don’t want to have to worry about refrigeration are the ingredients you are using in your dishes. If your ingredients are frozen or refrigerated to begin with they’ll likely need to be kept cool if they’re not baked or cooked in some way first.

If I know that we’ll be outdoors and not able to keep something cool on a really hot day I usually avoid using dairy ingredients or frozen ingredients (that need to stay frozen). Hard cheeses are usually okay to include in salads and side dishes because they can be served at room temperature.
