How to Find Local Grocery Deal Blogs

I so appreciate when my readers leave questions and comments here at MoneywiseMoms! Often, they lead to posts that can help you learn even more about shopping smart and saving money. Last week, my How to Organize Coupons post prompted this reader question:

How do I find blogs that match the grocery stores near me?

There are two easy ways to find blogs that cover the stores you shop. Then, you’ll need to determine if it’s a local blog or not:

Use a large national directory
Head to The Frugal Map or Money Saving Mom’s Store Deals list, where you’ll be able to sort by state or store name to find blogs that cover the weekly sales and do coupon matchups consistently. If you’re already reading a local blogger, see if she’s linking up to others, as I do with the NoVA Grocery Deals.

Google for information
Use the name of your store and the words “coupon matchups” or “deals.” You may want to add the first date of the sales cycle as well, such as “Safeway deals 6/29″ (as I did in the graphic below). From the results, click around and determine whether a blog is applicable to you. For some stores/chains, it won’t matter that the blogger you’r reading lives a few states away, but in some cases it does. Here at MoneywiseMoms, for example, I cover the Safeway store matchups every Wednesday when the new sales cycle starts. Because I live in the Mid-Atlantic, our ad and prices differ greatly from Safeway in Arizona or Vons in California (Vons is another store in the Safeway chain). While some of the larger, national promos carry though, often the shelf prices differ. Therefore, I recommend that you find a local blogger to follow, when you can.

Once you’ve landed at a few local blogs, you might find the coupon match-ups confusing. Tomorrow, I’ll share how to read the hieroglyphics that you’ll see when you go to some store deal/coupon matchup blog posts.

Where to Find NoVA Grocery Deals

Thanks to those of you who come to MoneywiseMoms every Wednesday for the Mid-Atlantic Safeway deals and coupon matchups. I hope you find them helpful! If you live in the DC area, you know that our prices and sales ads differ than those in the rest of the country. That’s why it’s important to find blogs that help you with your shopping using the coupons found in our region. I’ve teamed up with some great local bloggers to help cover the NoVA Grocery Deals for the Mid-Atlantic stores. Here’s where you can find the deals you need:

Aldi: Get the Aldi deals every week from Laura at BeltwayBargainMom. Aldi’s sales cycle runs Wednesday-Tuesday.
Bloom: Sarah at CapitallyFrugal covers Bloom’s deals each week. Bloom’s sales run Wednesday through Tuesday.
Giant: BeltwayBargainMom also covers the Giant deals each Friday, since the Giant sales cycle runs Friday through Thursday.
Harris Teeter: You’ll also find the Harris Teeter deals at CapitallyFrugal. Harris Teeter runs its sales Wednesday-Tuesday.
Safeway: I do the Safeway deals every Wednesday, since Safeway’s sales cycle runs Wednesday through Tuesday each week.
Wegmans: Liz at FrugallyBlonde covers the Wegmans deals every week. The Wegmans sales cycle runs Sunday-Saturday.

Food Bank Challenge–Safeway

By combining Safeway’s sale prices with coupons, I was able to purchase all of this to donate to my local food bank:

3 Mini Wheats Little Bites 7.47* (used three $1.00 off coupons)
5 Green Giant Canned Vegetables $1.95
4 Quaker Instant Oatmeal 6.00 (used two $1.25/2 coupons)

After coupons, I paid $9.92! *There was also a Catalina promo running for a FREE gallon of milk when you buy 3 Mini Wheats, so I kept that for our family. You can see the weekly Safeway (and partner store) matchups each Wednesday here at MoneywiseMoms.

FAQ: How do I find deals at other grocery stores?

So you’re reading Moneywise Moms (thank you), and you’re thinking: We don’t have that store here. What about the coupon matchups I need for my area? Don’t worry–I’ve got you covered.

If you live in Florida and want the coupon match-ups for Publix, head over to BeCentsAble’s Grocery Gathering. Shopping Meijer in Michigan? Check the Grocery Gathering. By looking at the Local Stores link, you’ll see all the major grocery store chains listed. Each store has at least one blog covering the weekly sales with coupon matchups. Find the ones for your area and bookmark them, subscribe to their emails, or add their RSS feeds to Google Reader.

Where My Head is This Week

I’m in a rush to get to get my house clean and put together for what I’m calling the “Cavalcade of Company” that begins this Thursday* and will continue through Labor Day. It’s so we don’t have to travel with three small children or spend the money or sleep in guest rooms/hotel rooms with three kids who have, as we call them, “the jimmy legs.” You get no sleep, just kicked continuously in the stomach, groin, whatever awkward angle they’re in over the course of the night.

So I’m taking a break from Meal Planning this week, but you can still see what’s going on over at Menu Plan Monday at OrgJunkie. Yes, we’re still eating, but you can guarantee we’re eating the same old summertime fare that we did last week and the week before. I’m boring like that.

There are some good deals coming up at Safeway Wednesday, so I’ll get that to you, otherwise I’m going to link out to others so you don’t miss anything (like below). I also have a ton of home decor posts that I need to share with you, because that’s where my head is right now. I’m spending less time on the computer and more time working around the house. I

She’s got a list of everything that’s on sale everywhere this week–and there are some great deals to be had at Staples and CVS–but I’m soooo not thinking about back to school. I’m just getting a handle on the summer!

*Thursday my in-laws are coming to visit, and by “visit” I mean we’re going to work on fixing all the drywall from our plumbing problems last month. And replacing a toilet and tile floor. And a whole list of other things. If we have time. Oh–and go to the Air & Space Museum.

Buying Freebies to Donate

This week, Campbell’s Soup is on sale for .50/can at CVS. When you print this $1.00/2 coupon, you get two cans for FREE. You can print two coupons per computer. Yes–it’s that easy–you don’t need a card, any ECBs, any of that.

If you’re in the neighborhood, consider stopping in to pick up some FREE soup to donate to your local food bank or church. Food banks are continuing to struggle in this down economy. I know that when I drop off my items every few weeks, the volunteers are so thrilled to see me, especially when I come in with a bunch of cereal and pasta. As you read through the weekly store write-ups here and on other frugal blogs, keep an eye out for easy freebies like this one. Even if it’s something you wouldn’t normally buy, it can be worth buying something you don’t need just to help out others.

Safeway this week 4/22

NOTE: Safeway deals are also applicable to their partner stores: Dominicks, Genuardis, Vons, Pavilions, Tom Thumb, Randalls, and Carrs.

I suppose it is possible to shop at Safeway and NOT do the Living Well, Feeling Great promo. You can buy the items below with coupons and get a good deal, it’s just BETTER if you include them towards the $30 threshold for the $10 Catalina coupon. Just sayin‘.

Deer Park Water is uber-cheap with or without the LWFG promo. Just go in to buy two packs, and you’ll pay $3.98 and get $2.00 back. Not bad! Include these as part of your $30 threshold for the promo, and you pay .31 for a 6pk. See the details in yesterday’s post.

Lysol Wipes are $2.50 and are part of the LWFG promo. There’s a printable $1.00/2 (look under Surface Care) or you might have coupons from the 3/15 paper.

Yoplait Yogurt is .50 each when you buy 10, and these are part of the LWFG promo. There was a coupon for .40 off 6 cups in the 4/20 paper, which will double at some stores, making these even cheaper.

Dove Hair Care is $3.99 and part of the LWFG promo. There was a $1.00 off coupon in the 3/15 paper.

Reynolds Recycled Aluminum Foil is $2.29, and there was a .55 off coupon in the 4/20 paper which doubles at most stores. It’s part of LWFG and you can print a rebate today only.

Most prices have stayed the same from last week. I spent quite a while in Safeway today (!) and the All Detergent is still $4.49, Huggies Wipes are still $5.99, etc. That’s good news!

Some other, non-promo deals this week:

Lucerne Milk is $2.99/gallon when you buy two. Cheapest around these parts, that’s for sure. Too bad we’re not drinking milk anymore…

Freschetta Pizza is $4.99 and there was a $1.00 off coupon in the 3/1 paper.

Get 2 Free Boxes of Safeway Pasta when you buy 2 Classico Pasta Sauces at $2.00 each. This runs from 4/20-4/30 and will come off automatically on your receipt.

Saturday and Sunday only:

80% Lean Ground Beef is $1.97/lb.
Tomatoes on the Vine are .99/lb.
Da Vinci or Cavit Wine is $9.98.
Wish-Bone Salad Dressing is .99 each. There were coupons in the 3/15 paper; the amount varied by region.

The deli is offering FREE drink and chips with any Signature Cafe Sandwich (I recommend the Tuscan Chicken–it’s fantastic). There’s also a coupon in the ad for a regular-size Signature Sandwich for $3.99. Cheap lunch!

The pharmacy is offering a coupon for 10% off your next grocery purchase when you fill an new or transferred prescription for allergy medications (Allegra, Clarinex, Flonase, Singulair, etc.). This runs through May 31.
